Platinum Stars will not be daunted all by the prospect of facing Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 semifinals … they have the better of the cup record against the AmaKhosi!
Stars have met Chiefs four times previously in cup competitions and have won on three occasions, including in the semifinals of last seasons Telkom Knockout competition.
Chiefs’ only success came over a decade ago when they defeated then newly-promoted Dikwena 2-0 in the final of the Coca-Cola Cup, the fore-runner to the Telkom competition.
This will be the first time that the clubs have played one-another in a cup competition other than the Telkom tournament.
Following that final defeat in 2003, Stars won a home quarterfinal clash with Chiefs 2-1 in 2006, with Simba Marumo getting the goals. Dikwena also went on to lift the trophy on that occasion.
They hosted Chiefs again in another quarterfinal clash in 2011 and again won the day, registering a 2-1 success thanks to goals from Henrico Botes and Thuso Phala.
Then came last year’s semifinal meeting at FNB Stadium that was settled by a lone strike from defender Thabiso Semenya.
Stars’ previous cup meetings with Chiefs:
Coca Cola Cup final – Chiefs 2 (Fredericks, Mayo (pen)) Stars 0
