Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson has heaped praise on two goal hero Gerald Phiri, whose superb brace helped Dikwena edge out Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 in an Absa Premiership match at Dr Molemela Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Phiri scored two freekicks in a space of two minutes to put Dikwena in the driving seat before Bonginkosi Ntuli fired a third deep in the second half. The three goals garnered Dikwena a much needed win. Delighted coach Cavin Johnson says Phiri’s impressive goals were due to hard work the Malawian puts in training.
“Phiri has been working hard at training practicing freekicks. In other matches he has been floating them and I told him, just put the ball in the net. He hit the freekicks and they both went in. Well done to him,” Johnson told Platinumstars.com.
Dikwena’s win over Celtic was their first in the last five league matches. Johnson says it has been long coming.
“Since the beginning of the year, we have been playing well but things didn’t go our way. This is what Platinum Stars is made of. They know where they have been. They know when they were second. They know when they were third and they know when they were 14. They know how to fight. Today the ball was on our side and we scored the goals,” said Johnson.
Though Dikwena emerged victorious, Johnson is of the view that his men were not on top of their game at certain moments in the game.
“We scored two early goals, took the foot off the paddle and allowed them to come at us but we defended well. We are happy that we got the three points. We have been waiting for a win for a long time,” said Johnson.
The win sees Dikwena move from position 14 to position 11 on the Absa Premiership table.
