Phiri shines on international duty
Platinum Stars midfielder Gerald Phiri scored a superb freekick to get Malawi off to a dream start in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier over the weekend.
Phiri’s solitary goal ensured Malawi amass maximum points at the expense of Comoros at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. The player nicknamed Papa G tells of his delight at helping his country to a crucial win on Saturday afternoon.

“It feels great to score especially on national duty. You score a goal and 16 million people celebrate a win. It’s great for me, my teammates and technical team. It was my fifth goal for the national team. It was a freekick. It was a replica of the second freekick I scored against Bloemfontein Celtic. The difference is that this one didn’t hit the post. It went straight in. That’s my trade mark. I practice freekicks everyday in and out of training. I look up to David Beckham,” said Phiri.

Phiri and his Flames teammates are in the same group with Morocco and Cameroon. Despite being with the giants Phiri is confident that his country will qualify for the Afcon to be held in Cameroon in 2019.

“We have got a pretty difficult group on paper with Morocco and Cameroon. Cameroon are the hosts. Chances are high of any team qualifying. So we have a new coach, new philosophy. As a group it was our first time playing together. We played the way the coach wanted I think a couple more games we will gel,” said Phiri.

Phiri joined Dikwena half way through the season. He is keen to improve his work rate in the coming season.

“It was a great season for me. I was brought in to the team very well. We did a great job because the way we were in the first half was shaky but we pushed hard in the second half. It was great for me to get some game time. I need to improve on my right foot and my work rate because I didn’t finish a lot of 90 minutes. This was my first time playing after two years on the stands. I has to do with my fitness,” said Phiri.

Meanwhile Dikwena players – Benson Shilongo and Willem Mwedihanga didn’t have a great weekend as their country Namibia lost 1-0 to Guinea-Bissau on Saturday afternoon.
