Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson lamented poor defensive showing as Dikwena crashed out of the Telkom Knockout after a 3-1 loss to Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.

All the goals scored were due to defensive frailties on the side of Dikwena. The first goal came in the second minute of the first half. Baroka were awarded a freekick and their defender Tshepiso Lietsisa swung in a wicked ball that the defence failed to deal with. Then Mzwane Mahashe rose the highest to head past Mbongeni Mzimela. The second goal was similar. In the second half, Mahashe headed past Mzimela again from a Lietsisa corner kick. The third goal was also due to defensive error by Ryan De Jongh, whose headed back pass was latched onto by Nyasha Munetsi. Munetsi looped the ball over advancing keeper Mzimela to make it 3-0.

A disappointed Johnson felt the goals were more of his men’s doing than Baroka’s brilliance.

“I don’t know if they deserved it but we gave them two set pieces which you work on everyday of your life. You think your players are brave enough. They have got to come to the party. We gave then another silly on goal in the end. Did they work for their goals? No they didn’t. Did we work for our goal that we had in the last minute of the game? Yes. I thought we had possession of the game but possession doesn’t win you games. We have got to be better. We have got to come to the party better,” said Johnson.

Dikwena fought with their all to forge a comeback. Just before the half time break, Sphamandla Mlilo’s attempt to pull one back saw his well struck shot ricochet off the cross bar. Towards the end of the match Dikwena were able to pull one back through substitute Sipho Senne, who got on to the end of what was a well worked move by Dikwena. Senne scored from a close range with a low shot.

Johnson will be looking for a response when his men travel to Chippa United for an Absa Premiership clash this coming Friday.
